Excel and Power Query

Ok, one of the more interesting chats I have had over the past month or two was with Dan Fay from MSR who pointed me to the power query add in for excel. So, this to me is the best news I have seen in a while for our sort of library in that it provides a convenient mechanism for non-programmers to get real live data into an environment in which it can be analysed.

The image below shows the add in and a couple of menus, notably the "other" data sources.

This gives a range of possibilities - especially the one of connecting to, and parsing from, external bio file servers like genbank, and of course local files and various other possibilities. We are looking at this as a significant project and we have some very good people looking at it. All thoughts are welcome at this point.
